Tunisian Opposition Leader Receives Prison Sentence
The ruling was delivered by the specialized criminal division responsible for terrorism cases at the Tunis First Instance Court.
The legal proceedings are part of a broader crackdown on individuals accused of threatening national security.
In addition to Ghannouchi, several former high-ranking officials and prominent political personalities received 12-year prison terms.
Among them were ex-intelligence chief Mahrez Zouari, former airport security chief at Tunis-Carthage International Airport Abdelkarim Abidi, senior Ennahda figure Habib Ellouze, and Rayan Hamzaoui, the mayor of Ezzahra in the province of Ben Arous.
The court also imposed 35-year jail sentences on a group of individuals who remain fugitives.
These include Nadia Akacha, a former chief of staff to the president, Ghannouchi’s son Moaz Ghannouchi, as well as Ennahda members Adel Daadaa and Rafik Abdessalem.
The case was officially forwarded to the judiciary on May 15, 2024, by the indictment chamber.
Court sessions commenced on May 2, 2025, and experienced multiple delays before the final verdicts were scheduled for July 8.
Approximately 20 people are facing prosecution in this matter.
The allegations encompass “forming a terrorist group, conspiracy against internal state security, terrorism financing, money laundering, attempting to overthrow the government and using social media to incite violence.”
